True colours: uncovering the full value of your organisation

Cover of front cover

Summary

A Performance Hub guide for busy chief executives, trustees and managers of third sector organisations (charities, community groups, voluntary organisations and social enterprises) who want their organisations to be more successful in the future.

This guide aims to encourage and help you to:

  • appreciate the broader value your third sector organisation (TSO) brings to society, and
  • better communicate this to others.

Often, TSOs don't communicate their value strongly enough.  As a sector, we sometimes dont bother to tell others about our successes.  Some TSOs still believe that, because they have social goals, the value of their work goes without saying.  It does not.

A focus on outcomes is crucial, but many TSOs offer broader benefits as well, and these must be captured and expressed if the full value of organisations is to be appreciated.

By spending time telling true, powerful stories about the range of value delivered by our organisations, we help improve the future success of our organisations, which is central to achieving our primary purpose making a difference to the world.

This guide brings together learning from third sector marketing, from evaluation, and from research into relationships with funders and public sector commissioners. It includes exercises that might help you appreciate your full value, and covers key skills in communicating your value to different audiences, as well as signposting to other sources of support.

It also takes a closer look at one particular audience: public sector procurers, examining the concept of third sector value when delivering public sector services, as well as the procurement process and contracting processes themselves.
